Tuning In to the Voice of the People

When it comes to music awards judged by industry peers, the Western world has the Grammy Awards while the Chinese world looks to the Golden Melody Awards. As for music awards based by public opinion and consumption, there are the Billboard Music Awards and the American Music Awards. But 16 years ago, there was no equivalent in the Chinese-speaking world. Many music fans lamented that the talent and efforts of their favorite singers were not recognized and seen. Meanwhile, singers rarely had the opportunity or the stage to thank their fans for their support.

In 2005, KKBOX became the world’s first legal music streaming service, frontiering a wave of music digitization. The following year, the KKBOX Music Awards was born. Unlike other Chinese music awards, the KKBOX Music Awards is based on music listening statistics. Artists with the most streams on KKBOX annually are celebrated with “Artist of the Year” awards. It is the first Chinese music award to be determined by public opinion. The annual KKBOX Music Awards has over time become one of the most viewed and highly anticipated live music events.  Artists now have an arena sized stage to thank their fans for their support through spectacular memorable performances and collaborations.

With the expansion of KKBOX service from Taiwan to Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan, KKBOX racks up over 10 billion plays every year. Since the annual KKBOX Music Awards and charts are based on listenership, it is the primary indicator of Chinese music industry trends. Today, the KKBOX Music Awards and charts are the most credible music charts in the Chinese music world with tens of millions of music fans participating in celebrating all genres of music. In addition, the ceremony has grown from a small music event held at a nightclub into a 10,000-person concert event held at the Taipei Arena.

Over the past 16 years, KKBOX has never lost sight of its mission to support and empower music and creators. The award ceremonies have expanded   to feature overseas heavyweights such as Super Junior, Nogizaka46, and Perfume. Categories such as “Best New Artist” have been added, allowing popular new artists and bands to perform on a big stage in 2019, the Mandopop R&B Princess Julia Wu and international EDM superstar DJ Alan Walker performed their collaborative version of his global smash hit “Faded” at the awards ceremony. The performance clip has been viewed over 110 million times YouTube to date.

In terms of visual design, the KKBOX Music Awards features the state-of-the-art sound and lighting design, utilizing multi-angle 360 panoramic VR cinematics, as well as 5G high-speed, low-latency connectivity, high-quality live video and audio technologies for real-time online fan interactions. The award ceremony is now broadcasted by over 30 media outlets in six global markets with more than 10 million viewers.
