Driving Creators in the Driver’s Seat

Ask enough musicians and they will tell you that they cherish creative freedom the most. How might one harness the resources to grow their music career while staying in the driver’s seat?  In Taiwan, nothing matters more than freedom. Musicians who do not want to sacrifice their creative identities in return for mainstream success often face the predicament of insufficient funds and lack of distribution and marketing resources.

KKFARM started as a cultural and creative investment company in 2017 to help independent musicians and producers create their own music labels. We believe musicians are in fact entrepreneurs and by providing them with venture capital and mentorship, we hope to create a generation of savvy music entrepreneurs who are in control of their own careers. We built our own music distribution platform, Soundscape, and have been committed to marrying the use of big data to significantly reduce the effort musicians need to make to run their business while being able to form effective creativity and business strategies.

The first music label we invested in is Taiwan’s leading hip hop/R&B brand, ChynaHouse.  The label is currently home to artist entrepreneurs-in-residence, Julia Wu.  From her debut, ChynaHouse has applied a unique mix of music and mathematics to strategize the three successful albums in under three years. She has performed multiple times at Taiwan’s famed Taipei Arena and has secured multiple brand endorsement with leading international brands. In 2020, singer/songwriter Kimberley Chen returned to join her longtime friend Julia and team when she joined the label as an artist entrepreneur. Most popularly known for her Mandopop classic “愛你”, Kimberley decided to explore a new phase in her career because she valued the sense of ownership that ChynaHouse afforded their artist. Seeking to mentor new artists and break new markets, she stated that joining the label was a homecoming where she felt empowered to be her best self after years in the traditional Taiwanese major label ecosystem.  Other artists who have begun their successful careers with ChynaHouse include ?te, who was nominated for Best New Artist in the 2020 Golden Melody Awards, up and coming hip-hop quartet CHING G SQUAD and Gen-Z R&B singer/songwriter Jinbo.

Another music label journey we have been grateful to have been able to be part of is SKRpresents, founded by award winning renowned music producer Skot Suyama.  After a decade of having been the pen behind some of Mandopop’s most quintessential hit songs, Skot decided to create SKRpresents as a home for artists who placed music and songwriting first. In 2019, SKRpresents released the debut single and album from Gen-Z hip hop juggernaut OSN. Skot helped OSN craft his unique lyrical rap style and sound which led to his nomination for the Best New Artist and Song of the Year at the 2020 Golden Melody Awards. SKRpresents is also home to Evangeline Wong, 2019 Golden Melody Awards Best New Artist nominee and popular singer/songwriter Vicky Chen.
